Gyoshi drew the pictures for a picture book entitled Shiki Kachō Gafu (i.e., Flowers and Birds of the Four Seasons). The book’s thirty-two pages are shown in this gallery. Click on a picture to enlarge it. This book, published in 1891, is unusual because the picture designs were engraved on copper plates rather than carved on blocks of wood. The latter was standard practice in Japan at that time. The picture designs themselves are very similar to some drawn in the 1880s by Bairei Kōno. It is not clear whether Gyoshi was a student of Bairei or was simply influenced by Bairei’s picture books of flowers and birds. To see a gallery with larger pictures click here.
